Project Overview
Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Houseman Field Playground is a vibrant example of what community collaboration can accomplish. Although part of a city park, this exciting playground project was made possible through fundraising efforts led by neighborhood residents and local organizations, along with support from the GameTime Community Champions Playground Grant.
Designed for children ages 5–12, the playground features a colorful, ninja-style obstacle course layout that encourages active play, climbing, and adventure. With challenging climbing elements, multiple slides, tandem two-person swings, and a variety of interactive features, the space offers opportunities for children to build strength, coordination, and confidence while having fun.
A unique highlight is the Space Module, a specialized play feature offering cozy, enclosed spaces where children can explore sensory experiences or take a break from more active play. This thoughtful combination of high-energy activities and quieter play opportunities creates a welcoming environment for children with different interests and play preferences.
Brought to life by Sinclair Recreation, Houseman Field Playground demonstrates the power of neighborhood investment in creating engaging outdoor spaces that bring families together, inspire imaginative play, and strengthen community connections.
